Laura Woodward’s large sculptural installations for exhibition and the public realm broadly focus on kinetics, systems, and networks – and the impact of individual elements in larger complex systems. She is interested in why our bodies respond to movement, and how movement in artwork can expand possibilities for audience engagement and accessibility.

Over the past several years this focus has expanded somewhat, as she has started to explore systems of human experience through her work. Recent projects have considered, sometimes obliquely, areas such as parenthood, life-giving, relationships, and death. These considerations have manifested in kinetic sculptures, installations, videos, animations, drawings and text.

Woodward’s work has been nationally recognised through prizes, grants, public commissions, solo exhibitions, and significant group exhibitions. She has been awarded or shortlisted for numerous prizes, including winning the prestigious Melbourne Prize for Urban Sculpture Rural and Regional Development Award in 2020. Woodward’s growing public art practice includes several commissions throughout Victoria. Her work has toured Australia in the exhibitions “Experimenta Life Forms” and “Systematic”. She received Australia Council New Work Grants in 2010, 2013 and 2014 and a Creative Victoria Creators’ Fund grant in 2022. Woodward is a Lecturer in Art at the Faculty of Fine Arts and Music, the University of Melbourne.

The artist would like to thank Noosa Regional Gallery for supporting her to take part in the Floating Land Artist Camp in October 2024, where she was able to develop the video works presented in this exhibition.
